Growing up the the noise of alternative urban culture surrounded me. I love the typography of graffiti art. Cartoon letters and big display type painted on walls by my heroes. Some of my heroes were borrowing and adapting characters from comics and cartoons that I also loved.
In this original painting I included a character from the Deadbone comic by Vaughn Bode which was used by the legendary graffiti artist Dondi. He had adapted the character in a piece called ‘Children of the grave part 2’. I felt it would be a fitting homage to both artists to produce a new evolution of the same character with a new meaning.
The title of the painting, Just a kid, is taken from a piece painted on a New York subway train featured in the classic street art book Subway Art by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfont. It reminded me of my younger self trying to be older than I was. The mashup of letters encapsulating the noise, shapes and colours experienced when growing up. It was an exciting yet challenging time trying to define who I was. It never left me, I still feel it.
